When a chef designs a menu it should be attractive, describe the dishes well and easy to read. Not unlike restaurant menus, web designers want users to be attracted to a beautiful web page that clearly communicates information but is also easy to navigate.
Chefs can contemplate the plating of a dish for days before a customer sees it. They must consider color, height, plate size and shape and functionality. Designers use many of the same factors when creating. Consistent colors, screen sizes and usability are at the forefront of good design.
The best restaurants know that the back of the house (the kitchen) must work in tandem with the front of the house (wait staff, bartenders) to be successful. In web development, front end developers (who focus on visual elements and functions that users interacts with) need to work alongside back end developers (who focus on logic, servers and behind the scenes data) in order to create the best possible website or application.
A real chef knows they are only as strong as the team they are surrounded by. It's no different when designing a project. Working with the strongest individuals in graphics, photography, animation and other areas are the key to creating something that exceeds expectations.
